Broken Mirrors

Mohamed AdenSomalia

Barren deserts hold more comfort than hoyo’s words sometimes.
I am not broken, for I had to have been whole to begin with.
Marrakesh, Morocco, was red in color.
I am black in hue.
Isawera was blue, and Somalia is rubbles.

The universe has a funny way of being humorous.
For example, I was coddled as a child but abandoned as a teen,
Or I have the privilege to choose my path in life, but I am constricted by that very fact,
Or that I am really afraid of heights, but I fly everywhere,
Or that I chase love but never take the leap of faith,
Or that certain scents linger in my mind, but my memories of the moments fade into the background.

Cory and Topanga might be the love that I chase, but it’s not the one I think I deserve.
The funniest of all is that I call Kenya my home, but my actual home burns in the distance.

I am Mohamed Abdirahim Aden, black in hue,
The butt of the universe’s jokes,
Abandoned as a teen,
Undeserving of love,
Constricted by choice and confused as hell,
A mosaic of fucked up shit
